Marc-Olivier Brouillette is a partner in our Insurance Law Group. His practice focuses on construction and insurance law, as well as general civil liability cases. Mark-Olivier joined RSS as a summer student before returning to article with the firm.

During his career in the Canadian Football League (CFL), he was heavily involved with the League’s Players Association, having served as a player representative for several years in addition to sitting on various committees.

Marc-Olivier is regularly involved in a variety of insurance and litigation matters, and assists senior partners in complex files and lengthy trials. He also works on transportation law cases, particularly in the trucking, warehousing, and maritime transportation fields. Marc-Olivier represents defendants and plaintiffs in claims arising from accidents, loss of cargo, fires and thefts. He is often called on to advise and represent his clients in international multi-modal transportation files and large-scale construction matters.


Representative files and mandates

Transportation Law

  • Defended freight forwarders in a claim of over $14.3M following a fire on an ocean-freight vessel
  • Co-counsel for a cargo owner in a claim against a vessel owner and carriers for damages caused to aluminum refinery equipment during ocean carriage; negotiated a $1M settlement
  • Regularly advises several helicopter transportation service providers with regard to matters before the Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada

Insurance Law

  • Represented several insurers as lead counsel in two subrogation claims against Bell Canada as part of a series of claims related to a fallen electrical pole, totalling over $5.6M
  • Defended a municipality in a $3.5M claim made by a disgruntled residential developer
  • Defended an excavation company as second chair in environmental contamination claims instituted by Hydro-Québec and the City of Montreal, totalling over $2M
  • Defended a general contractor in a $1.9M claim for damages to nearby buildings and the promoters’ profit losses
  • Defended an electrician following a fire that caused over $750K of damages to a commercial fishing vessel
  • Successfully negotiated a discontinuance of suit against Port of Montreal workers following the collapse of a crane causing nearly $800K in damages
  • Represented a terminal operator following water ingress into a harborside silo

Community Involvement

Together at School Program

During his time with the Montreal Alouettes, Marc-Olivier was involved in the organization’s Together at School program and toured the province of Quebec, sharing his story of perseverance in an effort to help curb the dropout rate in several affected regions.

Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada

Marc-Olivier has dedicated numerous hours to amateur athletes through the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada‘s Pro Bono Program. The SDRCC was established under the Physical Activity and Sport Act of Canada to facilitate the resolution of disputes among sports organizations and between an organization and affiliated persons. As legal counsel for athletes of all levels and ages, he provides advice and represents amateur athletes in matters including national team selection, financial assistance and anti-doping violations.

He has also been a regular guest speaker in Professor Karl Moore’s Strategic Management class at McGill University, where he shares his insights and lessons learned throughout his career as an attorney and professional athlete.
